Why’s extra protection against cyber security threats so important?
Cyber security breaches have become more prevalent in recent years, especially since the pandemic when an increase in home workers brought its own vulnerabilities. And the deluge of bad news just keeps coming…
Just last month, the NCSC revealed that Sandworm (or Voodoo Bear) has replaced the exposed VPNFilter malware with a more advanced framework – Cyclops Blink. But they highlight that the sophisticated malware has actually been active since 2019.
The NCSC, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) previously attributed the Sandworm actor to the Russian GRU’s Main Centre for Special Technologies GTsST.
Sandworm cyber-attacks are believed to include everything from the BlackEnergy disruption of Ukrainian electricity in 2015 to attacks against the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 2018. You can find more information and mitigation advice via the NCSC website.
What’s two-factor authentication got to do with it?
Among all the doom and gloom, Google has announced that its account hacks have halved since they started a push for two-step authentication by default in October 2021. The internet giant has put its own spin on the cyber security measure, coining it “two-step verification” (2SV).
They have come a long way since 2018 when it was revealed by a Google engineer that over 90% of active Gmail accounts were not using two-factor authentication. Although a lack of general understanding is still causing barriers.
While more web services support 2FA, consumers are slow to adopt it. In 2020, Twitter stated that only 2.3% of active account users had enabled the security feature since it was introduced in 2013.
